:: IV Contrast Guidelines for CT Exams
Is the patient over 50 years old?
Is the patient diabetic? If yes, see below
Does the patient have kidney disease or renal dysfunction?
Is the patient on chemo or radiation treatment?
Does the patient have a history of multiple myeloma?
If the answer is YES to any of the above the patient will need BUN and Creatinine labs within 30 days prior to the CT exam!
The patient should not eat the morning of the exam; however, the patient should drink extra water to hydrate before IV contrast --- this is VERY important!
If YES to Question #2-
Does the patient take Glucophage or Metformin?
The patient will need to stop the medication the night before the exam
Do not re-start medication until BUN and Creatinine labs are drawn within 72 hours post exam and normal results received.
Flush the kidneys post exam with plenty of clear liquids
