Breast Ultrasound
As a complement to mammography, breast ultrasound may be used to further evaluate a lump or mass to determine if it is solid or a fluid-filled cyst. During the exam, a technologist will move a hand-held transducer across the skin and capture certain images as they appear on a monitor that will aid one of our Radiologists in making a diagnosis.
Following a breast ultrasound, a breast biopsy may be performed if clinically indicated. Ultrasound imaging is used to assist with proper positioning of the biopsy needle so only a small sample of tissue is obtained. That sample is sent to a Pathologist who specializes in breast tissue for analysis under a microscope. Ultrasound guided biopsy is a highly effective way to evaluate abnormal tissue within the breast in a minimally invasive way.
