Preparing for an Ultrasound Exam
General Ultrasound
- Wear loose-fitting clothing.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions. Some ultrasound exams require you not to eat or drink before the exam; other ultrasound exams require you to drink extra fluids prior to the exam.
OB Ultrasound
- Wear loose-fitting, two-piece clothing to allow easy access to the abdomen
- Drink up to six glasses of water the hour before your exam IF you are instructed to do so by your doctor (usually in early pregnancy). In most cases, a full bladder during the exam is not necessary
- Empty your bladder before a transvaginal ultrasound (transducer is inserted into the vagina).
