The newly installed system is an interactive 3D planning system using the Simplant Ver. 10 software and editing tool for predictable treatment planning of dental implants. It allows the implant surgeon to find the ideal position of the implants without "scatter artifact" in the 2D image. Together with our new Siemens 64 slice CT scanner, this imaging is state of the art.

Why the Editing Package for SimPlant at Regents Imaging is Important? |

Metal in the patient's mouth causes a scattering of data during the CT scan. This scattering appears as white or black streaks in the CT data, but is isolated by slice. The scattering becomes a permanent part of the patient's CT scan and cannot be eliminated from the 2D images (axials, panoramics and cross-sectionals). Fortunately, special Editing software allows us to "erase" the scatter from the 3D image. The CT technologist can process the patient's CT data to remove the spinal column, erase scatter streaks, and "disconnect" the scan template or teeth from the other anatomy.

To illustrate, here is an example of a patient scan that produced scatter. The study has been edited at the CT site. Notice that after the editing is complete, scatter from neighboring metal crowns still makes the scan template invisible in the 2D axial image. However, there is no scatter visible in the 3D model. |

Another useful application is to separate the 3D model for the scan template, allowing the dentist to:
use the alignment holes in the template for perfect esthetic implant planning
remove the scan template from the 3D to evaluate the crest of the bone underneath
